Shopping for a Microscope

Do you think one of your children or grandchildren might one day pursue a career to become a doctor, scientist or lab technician? Perhaps one of the best ways to ignite a child’s interest in one of these careers would be to gift them a microscope because it is an excellent scientific teaching tool.

Once children get a close look at various specimens under a microscope we never know what great things that might lead them to do in their future.

DealDash has a microscope with a BIN of $200 with a magnification up to 300 times and the high-quality, 5G lens is perfect for home or commercial use. According to the auction description, it can be used for “laboratory research, medical analysis, plant dissection and/or examination, jewelry inspection, printing inspection and more.” It comes with a height adjustable stand and calibration software. This microscope also comes with a user guide and software CD.

Best of all, several past winners have already received an awesome deal on it. Let’s look at some of them:

  • Feb. 21, this microscope sold at 40 cents and the winner paid a total of $2.20 including the cost of the 10 bids placed;
  • Feb. 22, this microscope sold at $3.05 and the winner paid a total of $23.05 including the cost of the 100 bids placed;
  • Feb. 20, this microscope sold at $59.54 and the winner paid a total of $28.75 including the cost of the 114 bids placed.

For more product specifications, see the auction listing.

A brief history of microscopes

Every major field of science has benefited from the use of some form of microscope, an invention that dates back to the late 16th century and Zacharias Janssen, a modest Dutch eyeglass maker.

According to my research, the most significant event in the history of microscopes took place in 1676, when living cells were first seen.

  • Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) has been recognized as the “father of microscopy.”
  • Carl Zeiss, a German engineer, revolutionized the quality of lenses in the 19th century.
  • The smallest object observed through a light microscope was 500 nanometers long.
  • In 2008 the Team 0.5 debuted. It is the world’s most powerful transmission electron microscope.
  • The first microscopes was called occhiolino (little eye), but Giovanni Faber coined the name microscope for the compound microscope Galileo submitted.
  • The use of microscopes in dentistry has become quite popular since the late 1980s.
  • July 18, 2018, Hans and Zacharias Jansen, Dutch brothers, are most commonly credited with inventing the compound microscope.

The bottom line

Many children would love to check things out in a microscope, and DealDash might be the best place to shop for one.

DealDash Auction Icons

It is important to pay attention to all of the DealDash icons in the upper left-hand corner of the auctions?

Each symbol provides specific information regarding each particular auction. DealDash has clearly marked the auctions and makes it very easy for us to know what rules apply. Before placing our bids, therefore, we need to pay attention to those rules. Otherwise, we could be confused or disappointed.

A woman looks at her phone while shopping online.
Brush up on the DealDash icons to have a better idea of how each auction works.

No exchange auctions

Did you see the round red circle icon symbol with reversed round white arrows inside the circle on the top and bottom?

This is one of the newest icons and this symbol means that if we win that auction we will not have the option of exchanging the auction product for bids instead.

I thought the auctions with this icon might have less competition and be easier to win because many shoppers only bid on certain auctions with the intention of exchanging them for free bids. If you do not yet know what this icon symbol stands for, however, you might be surprised at the end if you win.

No re-entry auctions

Did you see the round purple icon symbol with the fist inside? If you want to know what it stands for all you have to do is click on it and an explanation will appear. The first time I saw this icon, I did not completely understand how it worked, but here’s the deal:

  1. We must place our bids in BidBuddy only and are not allowed to place single bids.
  2. We can only get in and out of this auction BEFORE it reaches the “No New Bidders” status.
  3. At the time the auction reaches the “No New Bidder” status, we must be actively participating in the auction and, from that point on, we cannot run out of bids or leave the auction or we cannot get back in. We can, however, add more bids BEFORE we run out of bids. Once we are out, we are out and cannot get back in.

At first, I thought these auctions would be much easier to win but, after participating in several of them, I came to the conclusion that they can be very competitive.

Royalty only auctions

Did you see the round blue icon symbol with the ribbon and star inside the circle? That means only Royalty members at the “Hero Tier” level are allowed to participate in this auction.

To qualify as a Hero Royalty member we must purchase a minimum of 2,000 bids in a calendar month. We will remain in our royal tier status until the end of the following month when all tiers are reset to zero.

DealDash created a total of three”Tier Levels” and each one comes with additional benefits with the goal of rewarding its most loyal customers. The other two are the “Noble Tier” (which requires the purchase of 10,000 bids in one calendar month) and the “Monarch Tier” (which requires a purchase of 20,000 bids in one calendar month).

The icon for the “Noble Tier” is a round circle of leaves with a “D” in the middle, and the icon for the “Monarch Tier” is a king’s crown with a “D” on the crown.

The bottom line

Pay attention to the icon symbols and if you do not know what they stand for; check out the information on the bottom of the home page. Customer service would also be happy to answer any of your questions.

Luxury Shopping

If we ever want to do some luxury shopping, DealDash.com is a great place to do it. Why? We can win expensive luxury items on DealDash at bargain prices.

First, I should define what I consider to be a luxury item. If an item is nice to have but not something we need on a daily basis … or if we see something we like but we hesitate to get it for ourselves, it’s probably a luxury item.

A woman smiles as she enjoys shopping at high-end stores.
Right now DealDash has auctions for items that an give you a taste of the luxurious life!

I thought it might be interesting to look for a few luxury items on DealDash. After all, a luxury item could make a lovely Valentine’s Day gift, even if it arrives a little late.

Eye Mask

I think I found one. You might ask, “What’s so luxurious about an eye mask?” Well, this one is special and that is one reason it has a BIN of $595.00. It also features a dusty blue rabbit fur exterior with “smooth hypoallergenic silk against the eyes” on the inside. The eye mask measures 4-inches by 7.8-inches and has two adjustable elastic straps “designed to deter from tangled hair.” One size fits all, and it comes with a lightweight cotton drawstring bag that makes it easy to pack in a suitcase and go.

For me, this would definitely be a luxury item. At age 76, I have never in my life used an eye mask because I never had a need for one. I am one of those lucky people who can fall asleep with lights on and the TV blasting. However, I know people who are so light-sensitive that they might need to wear an eye mask to get a good night’s sleep. In fact, one of my sisters even brings pins and black tape to her motel room when she travels. She pins the drapes together so not a speck of light comes through and she puts black tape over the little green light on the thermostat. Therefore, having an eye mask like this to keep all the light out would surely make an awesome gift for her and other people who are that sensitive to such a tiny amount of light.

One thing I did not know is that using a mask like this could also aid in slowing the aging process by reducing the appearance of dark circles, decreasing puffiness and keeping the skin moist.

Indoor Water Fountain

Another luxury item is an indoor fountain with a BIN of $220.00. Nobody really needs to have an indoor water fountain but it could be the perfect luxury item to add to our home or office for an added touch and delightful ambiance.

I read articles saying that the sound of flowing water can have a soothing affect and give people a calm and serene feeling. It sounds like we could use an indoor fountain like this to create our own “inner sanctum” and who wouldn’t want that?

This Indoor Water Fountain measures 11.41 inches long by 8.26 wide and 9.44-inches high, so it is the perfect size to easily fit on a tabletop, desk or shelf. It is made out of durable polyresin and, according to the auction description it “features a sculpture of cascading stones nestled amongst smaller pebbles and greenery.”

It is important to note that for the fountain to work, a pump connection assembly is required with simple instructions provided. If you have any questions about that, I would suggest that you contact DealDash customer service representatives. I’m sure they will be happy to answer any questions you have. Also, if we do not like this particular water fountain DealDash has plenty of other fountain auctions coming up, both indoor and outdoor, so we are bound to find one that we especially like.
